Sudoku X adds two constraints to a normal 9×9 grid: each of the two main diagonals must also contain the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. Those eighteen cells belong to a row, a column, a box and now a diagonal, which makes them the most constrained squares on the board and usually the best place to start. The extra rule means fewer given digits are needed, so a sudoku X grid can look sparser than a plain sudoku of the same difficulty and still solve cleanly by logic.
