A grid that reads as words across and down — 4×4 or 5×5
Updated Sep 17, 2026
A word square is a grid where every row and every column spells a valid word. They are among the oldest word puzzles on record, and building one by hand is genuinely hard: each letter you place has to work in two directions at once. This generator constructs the square for you, removes some letters, and leaves a puzzle where the solver reconstructs the grid from what remains. Choose 4×4 for a short solve or 5×5 for a real one, then print the PDF with the completed square as the answer key.
Why use Puzzone
Words in Both Directions
Every row and column is a real word, so each answer is checked twice — by the across reading and by the down reading.
Two Sizes
4×4 for warm-ups and younger solvers, 5×5 for a proper vocabulary challenge.
Built From a Valid Square
The puzzle starts from a complete, verified word square, so the grid you are asked to reconstruct definitely exists.
